A healthy natural environment is good for people.
92% of adults agreed that spending time outdoors was good for their physical health
89% of adults agreed that spending time outdoors was good for their mental health.
84% of adults agreed that being in nature makes them very happy.
Spending time in nature, either as a leisure activity or as part of day-to-day life, is proven to benefit mental and physical health – people with doorstep access to nature are more active, resilient, and healthier.
Nature also provides clean air and water, supports the production of healthy food, cools the environment, alleviates flooding, and supports our local economy.
Cumbria Local Nature Partnership aim to:
- Advocate for, and support development of, opportunities to increase access to nature-rich green/blue space, particularly for those in urban or more deprived communities.
- Support activity to encourage people to take action for nature and facilitate partnership working to increase opportunities and participation.
- Identify and develop opportunities for collaborative projects that benefit nature, people, and health.
- Lead the development and promotion of Cumbria’s Natural Health Service.

Cumbria’s Natural Health Service
A healthy natural environment is good for people.

Cumbria’s Natural Health Service Goals
- nature integrated into other strategies, including health and wellbeing
- communities with improved mental and physical health
- sustainable, inclusive, accessible spaces for people and wildlife
Cumbria’s Natural Health Service is a Partnership working across sectors to make sure everyone has the opportunity to experience the health and wellbeing benefits of time outdoors and access to nature.
Nature doesn’t replace healthcare, but it helps people to stay well, supports mental and physical health and recovery, and strengthens individuals and communities.
Cumbria’s Natural Health Service is designed to complement existing health and social care provision by making the best use of our amazing natural spaces and nature-based activities to support people where they live, at the level they need.
Together, we are:
- highlighting the importance of nature as way of supporting health and wellbeing, alongside clinical and social care.
- bringing together partners across health, environment, planning, VCSE, and local government
- working to embed nature‑based approaches into policy, planning, and investment decisions
- scaling effective nature and health activity across the county and working collaboratively to design new programmes to meet emerging needs.
