| Plants, people, and pests: the importance of biosecurity to our environment and the economy
Date: 3 September 2025 (10:00am to 1:00pm)
Venue: Gosling Sike, Carlisle, CA3 0LD
Pests, diseases, and Invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) are everywhere – in our parks, woodlands, nature reserves, lakes, and rivers. Some can’t be missed, others are hardly visible, but the impact on our natural environment and the economy shouldn’t be overlooked. They are one of the top five drivers of biodiversity loss globally. They threaten our ability to meet our wider environmental targets and to respond to the climate and nature emergencies we face, and cost the Great Britain economy nearly £1.9billion pa in direct costs (The Great Britain Invasive Non-Native Species Strategy: 2023 to 2030 » NNSS).
This event aims to raise awareness of current and emerging pests, diseases and invasive Non-Native Species (INNS) and share expert advice on what people in all sectors and job roles can do to prevent the introduction and spread, particularly related to plants and trees through biosecurity measures.
Speakers include; Animal and Plant Health Agency, The Non-native Species Inspectorate, Cumbria Wildlife Trust, the Cumbrian Rivers Trusts, Cumbria Local Nature Partnership, and more to be announced.
