A new resource has been produced to support Town and Parish Councils to take action for nature, helping them to contribute to Cumbria’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy (LNRS) and take steps towards meeting their Biodiversity Duty.
The Nature Recovery Workbook for Town and Parish Councils was produced by Cumbria Association of Local Councils, Cumbria Local Nature Partnership, and Westmorland & Furness Council (the Responsible Authority for the LNRS) and launched at an event in Penrith on the 24 March.
The workbook is based on Cumbria’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy and has practical steps, links to useful resources, and inspiring case studies that will help Local Councils to relate the Strategy to their local area and decide on appropriate actions for nature that suits their community and environment.
The launch event was attended by representatives from Local Councils and featured speakers and stallholders from local councils, nature partnerships and environmental organisations.
Animal and Plant Health Agency shared resources and expertise on the importance of biosecurity to prevent the spread of pests and diseases.
Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre gave an overview of biodiversity recording in Cumbria and shared useful tools and tips to make recording species and habitats easier.
Cumbria Wildlife Trust and Raise Cumbria both shared fantastic examples of how their community team supports town and parish councils to take practical actions for nature.
Cumbria Association of Local Councils, Workington Nature Partnership and Ulverston Parish Council shared inspiring examples of different approaches that are already delivering great results for nature and communities.
The Rivers Trusts shared practical tips on managing invasive non-native species and preventing the spread of aquatic pests.
