Nature Recovery for Town and Parish Councils

The Nature Recovery Workbook for Town and Parish Councils has been developed by Cumbria Local Nature Partnership, Cumbria Association for Local Councils, and the Responsible Authority for the LNRS Westmorland and Furness Council.

It’s designed to help town and parish councils take action for nature that aligns with Cumbria’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy and help them meet their biodiversity duty.

Cumbria Local Nature Recovery Strategy

Cumbria’s Local Nature Recovery Strategy was published in November 2025. It was produced with contributions from the following:

  • Westmorland and Furness Council, as the Responsible Authority
  • the following Supporting Authorities:
    • Cumberland Council
    • Lake District National Park Authority
    • Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority
    • Natural England
  • Cumbria Local Nature Partnership, who supported the strategy development throughout
  • Cumbria Biodiversity Data Centre, who collated all spatial data and created the Local Habitat Map
  • Natural England, Forestry Commission and Environment Agency, who provided technical input to inform this strategy
  • Over 650 organisations and interested parties, who engaged with the LNRS either through newsletters and updates, attendance at workshops, or membership of technical working groups

Cumbria’s Plan Bee

Cumbria’s Plan Bee has been developed by Cumbria Local Nature Partnership as part of the Planting for Pollinators project.

It identifies a number of priority actions for councils, communities, farmers, landowners and businesses – in fact, everyone in Cumbria – to take forward to help our native insect pollinators.

Pilot Local Nature Recovery Strategy for Cumbria

In 2020, Cumbria was chosen as one of five pilot areas to trial the process for developing a Local Nature Recovery Strategy. Cumbria County Council led the project and worked with a wide range of partnerships, organisations and individuals, including Cumbria Local Nature Partnership, to produce the pilot publication.
